National League Round 4 Results

Round 4 of the national league came to an end on the 15th February with the majority of games once again being played in the last 2-3 weeks! Due to this, a number of players who either fell ill or got injured towards the end, lost vital points.

In Division 1, Steve Rizzo just knocked off James B Ghio to take the top spot by a solitary point. James who had enjoyed a 3 round spell at number one, lost a crucial game to Theresa Camilleri. This was enough to give Steve the chance to squeeze through to the top. Speedy Gonzales Martin Mallia who started the round on a slow note, notched up a couple of gears towards the end, beating both Theresa Camilleri and Chris Stahl 4-1 to end the round as number 3.

Division 2 saw Carl Camilleri dominate the round, winning all his games 4-1 or better. Carl’s impressive reach and speed were key factors in his game as he progressively wore his opponents down.
Peter Wirth, who was also in great form will join him in the first division. Peter’s fitness training for the half marathon paid dividends, particularly in the 3-2 hard won match over Dennis Attard Bondi. Meanwhile relative newcomer Malcolm Crabbe held his own and maintains his division two status.

Malcolm Naudi was impressive in his performance in the 3rd division and was the only player to win all his games 5-0. It was great to see Malcolm back to his old form, especially if you didn’t have to play against him! Joe Falzon, although losing to Malcolm takes the second spot after a hard fought victory over promising junior John Cuchieri.

Another player who hasn’t been on the scene for too long, but who has shown regular improvement is Matthew Borg. Matthew’s tennis style, clearly evident, punished his opponents with his accurate drops and volleys. Winning the 4th division now sees him in the 3rd for the first time. Mark Wright also moves into 3rd after two vital victories against James Cilia and Charles Cuschieri.

Division 5 was a rather one sided affair as Liz Said works her way back up into the fourth by winning all her games or taking walk-overs. Liz, a squash veteran dominated the T with her accurate shots keeping her opponents in the back corners. Sandra Schembri Wismayer, another vastly improved player joins her in the 4th division beating Melchior to second place by a single point.

Alex Scerri won the 6th division dropping only 3 games in four matches. Alex showed that he was only visiting the 6th for one round and made his mark from game one. Not far behind was David Alamango who has also been showing steady improvement and who beat Ray Said in the crucial decider for second spot.

Finally Division 7! Definitely all the praise goes to Charmaine Mifsud who made every effort to play her games and takes top spot after some fine performances. The participation in this division was poor, and a number of players have been knocked out to be replaced by keen newcomers in the next round.
