BRIEF HISTORY OF MALTA SQUASH | |
Squash Rackets Association was founded in 1986. The first chairman was Gino Camilleri, and was followed by Tony Bezzina, who held the post until 2002. Mario Giacchino was then elected and held his post till 2006. Malta Squash current chairman is Liz Said. The name was changed in 2004 to Malta Squash to make it easier to promote the sport.
A European Small Nations Squash Tournament has been held every year since 1989 and Malta has participated in it almost every year. The women’s National Squash team has so far won 8 gold and 3 silver medals in this tournament, whilst the men’s National team won gold once, silver 8 times and bronze once. These games were held in Malta in 1993 and 2001. The countries, which take part, are Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Cyprus, Iceland and Malta. Squash was included, for the first time, in the Games of the Small States of Europe, in 1999. The women’s Squash team won gold on this occasion and that same year, it was voted “Maltese National Team of the Year”. In the 2003 GSSE, the women won gold once more while the men won silver. The women’s National team participated for the first time in the European Club Championships, in September 2000. This tournament gave the team, the opportunity to compete against the top world squash players. |
